Water Level

(Upton, 2017) Many people know that the sea level has been rising for many years,  but how many people know the full extent of what is going on? For the past 1000's of years the sea level has been rising at a constant, but it is now getting to a point where we should all become aware and concerned about the shocking rate in which it is rising. To the right there is a GIF from the Climate Central website  The fact that the damage we have made is now irreversible, I feel there should be more attention brought towards this potentially critical situation, "The changes to tidal characteristics caused by future Sea Leven Rise presented in this paper have important long-term global implications." (Pickering et al., 2017). I read this from an online journal which looks at the future of the rising sea level and how that will impact on the global tides. Its interesting to me that all of this information is openly displayed on the internet yet there isn't any government fun...

What does the future hold?

In regards to the rising water level, the future is looking relatively bleak for some places. " Disruptive and expensive, nuisance flooding is estimated to be from 300 percent to 900 percent more frequent within U.S. coastal communities than it was just 50 years ago."  (Oceanservice.noaa.gov, 2018), this information came from a report wrote by the government agency;  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. U sing this as an example of what the future might hold, I personally feel worried for the future. Almost 40% of Americas population live in the proximity of a coast line, these statistics are shockingly high and they are all at risk of  flooding and shoreline erosion. Another source I looked at was this video from YouTube (right). It is a visualisation of what the earth would look like if all the ice melted. The rising temperatures and melting ice caps are both massive contributors to the rising sea level and last year we learnt that the da...

Manila

Manila is the capital city of the Philippines  and it is sinking by 4 inches per year. This has been caused by the mass groundwater extractions over the years.  Because the sea level is rising at a steady pace as well, this is another city that will be disappearing in a number of years to come. Due to the  agricultultural needs they also need to use water for things such as rice fields.  This was part of the mass demand of water which came from their groundwater tanks. The excretion of the water means the city hasn't got anything to support its weight.  There has been a dramatic increase in flooding and due to the sinking state of the city, their drainage system isn't what it needs to be. There was a journal sourced from the University of the Philippines which wrote " Now, after each heavy rainfall, several areas of the capital flood. The traffic grinds to a standstill and people wade through chest-high water." (Manabat, 2017). This shows how ba...

The Future of Jakarta

(M, Lin Mei, 2018) The capital of Indonesia, Jakarta, is sinking at an alarming rate and will soon be completely submerged if things don't change soon. This isn't just due to the rising sea level, the residences of Jakarta are using too much groundwater which causes the ground which is supporting the city to collapse and sink. The more water that is extracted from the ground, the more Jakarta sinks.  (BBC News, 2018) This is almost irreplaceable damage which can make existing problems worse, such as flooding. This city is prone to flooding even more so now than ever before. This is because on the way the landscape is left after all the water has been drawn out from underneath it. The image (right) makes this more clear to understand. The flood water is unable to to drain back into the sea because of the un even ground which holds the city.  Not enough people know about the problems surrounding this city, Jakarta is home to over 9.6 million residences but that may...

Introduction to Topic

The idea of this project is to look into the depth of water, in a physical sense. The water level is constantly changing for a number of different reasons, and for most, we as a whole are mostly to blame for. But, most importantly, I want to look into the sea level and disappearing cities and try to visually communicate this information in an interactive way for audiences to understand. I will be creating an animated sequence which I would use to promote awareness of the alarming rate of which the water is rising. This will be placed on a website through the use of parallax scrolling. At the end of the website I will create a visualisation on what the future holds based on my research, and I want to look into and highlight what countries will be non existent if we continue living this way. The image below to the left is the brief that I have chosen to work towards and base my project on. I have underlined the main topics that I will be focusing the main part of the a...

Brain Storming

These are some ideas which I originally sketched in my notebook, and then I took them and digitalised them to enable me to get a feel of my final project, how it would look and if it would work. Below is my chosen colour scheme and some basic sketches which will help in vision the project and scope what direction I will be going in.  I have drawn up some mock ups of what the website could potentially look like, to develop this even further will be creating digital mockups to go along side this with the colour scheme implemented.
